By Mike BoydBobAh, FIRST LESSON OF RESEARCH - always put in the source of where you get information from. Even if someone gives you one date or location - FOOTNOTE where the source came from or put under the name in the text the sourceAnd we have all be guilty of doing the same as you. Just assuming we will not get old and will remember ever thing.I would over come this problem by creating a second FILE from your existing one.
The first can be your MASTER FILE while the second COULD BE AN WORKING FILE.Someone a few weeks ago said they were in the process of getting the Slaymaker Papers. So they may send you an copy. There are some others whom I have be sent files on the Slaymaker Papers, but I can't say if they are all of them or just partI have an draft of this family; about 6 or 7 what I call raw data FILES, including one that has some or all of the Slaymaker Paper Files. I can send them to you if you wish. At least you will be able to footnote this data against what you currently have and the source.Mike BoydHistorical committee- Original Message -From: B1927b(a)aol.comTo: historian(a)clanboyd.orgSent: Wednesday, June 29, 2005 3:32 AMSubject: Beginner's DellimaMike, I am writing you because I was not sure if the whole mailing list should be blessed with my problem. If you think it is of enough general interest, feel free to address the list.I worked with a friend who allowed me to download the work she had done the Boyd line. Her work seemed to indicate I am a direct decedent of George Boyd (1689-1731 of PA.
And the Slaymaker legal documents. In my early and inexperienced efforts I co-mingled her work, my effort, and the Slaymaker papers. She is now deceased and her family, much to my horror, made no effort to preserve her files or her hard drive.I have not yet been able to confirm, to my satisfaction, the accuracy of her conclusions regarding my line of decent. My inclination is to set up a, 'Work in Progress,' and a file in which I clearly indicate either confirmation, informed speculation or point out a source with a disclaimer and attribute the source as far as I can determine it.
Only then would I want my name associated with it and feel I could put it on our List.Help and thanks a bunch for all the help you are to all of us. I surely wish I could be with you in Ireland but that's not in the cards.Blessings, Bob. By StormGreetings,I've posted my line a few times in the past, but always hit a brick wall.Hopefully the mass of information I am sending will connect with someone. Idoubt the text formatting will survive e-mailing. If you have questions, letme know.
If you are connected to this family, please contact me. William asa brother of Bruce and Alexander is my best guess, based on a few secondarysources. By Murray ReidThanks to 5 respondants I can now advise that the price of tea in 1825 was near 17/6 per pound which in todays terms would be approx 45 pound sterling! This price was effected by scarcity, distance form the source (China & India) but mostly by taxes.Prior to tea gaining popularity beer was the drink of choice. The brewers lobby to parliament resulted in the tax regime that made tea so expensive.Readers will also note that a certain tea party in Boston had far reaching results, the saddest of which is that Americans have been deprived of the virtues of Rugby and Cricket for over 200 hundred years. For further reading I would recommend this website Thanks again. Now I would appreciate someone identifying my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother, Elizabeth BOYD.Murray ReidNZ.
By Mike BoydMurrayTea in 1825 would have had to go back form India or Ceylon by sailing boataround Cape Hope in South Africa. I do not think they would ahve used anoverland route where the Suez Canel is these days.I do not know what period that took but when my family came from Chatham toSydney in 1826, they left in February 1826, got to Plymouth about 3 weekslater and them straight to Sydney, Aust without landing at any other point.I think they landed in Sydney about 10 July. So any trip from India toEngland would have been 3 or 4 months each way.
His pay was only oneshilling and three pence per day. They would have only been able to ship afew hundred tonnes per ship, so the cost of tea landed in London would havebeen quite high per pound. Then there was the cost of getting it toAyrshire. The current value of an 1825 pound, would be 10 - 20 times its 1825 value. You may have to contact the Economist newspaper or an University's EconomicDepartment to see if they could give you a better Index/estimate. But youcan see from the pay rates of an private in the British Army that it wouldbe an luxury item in th ehouse hold. No wonder, sh it went in the familyhistory.Mike BoydHistorical committeeHouse of Boyd SocietyBrisbane, Aust- Original Message -From: 'Murray Reid' To: Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 4:01 AMSubject: BOYD The price of tea, c1825I have a family history, written c1954, of my ancestors Hugh and ElizabethREID who lived in Maybole (1760 thru 1830) One extract refers to Elizabeth drinking tea valued at 17/6 a pound. Thank you very much for your interest. Barb Clark. By Dave BoydIn the June 19,2005 issue of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review (PA) the Spotlight section (B3) features the Isle of Man annual Tourist Trophy Races.
To liberally paraphrase the articles as I read them, anyone can mount a motorcycle and race up to 200 MPH over a 37.75 mile course. The reason this feature caught my eye is that top center, half page is a photo of american racer Wade BOYD. The following is from the article by Mike Seate:'At speed, it all just looks like a series of tunnels,' explains American TT regular Wade Boyd. 'You're going so fast, you see green tunnels when you pass under trees, and grey tunnels when you pass between walls.
I don't really have time to get scared,' he confessed. The 47 year-old San Francisco resident and art gallery curator follows in the footsteps of his father Bill who raced here in the 1960s. Unlike big name racers like McGuinness and Irishman Adrian Archibald, Boyd has no big corporate sponsors paying him to compete here and no million dollar motorhome to live in. For two weeks every year for the past 12, Boyd and hundreds of others live in rented trailers, maintain their race bikes in a muddy field turned-pit-area and risk their lives for little more than a dream. It can cost up to $10,000 in shipping fees and travel expenses, but Boyd wouldn't have it any other way.'
You really can't call yourself a biker until you've tried this at least once. There really is nothing else that can compare,' he said, sounding almost serene. For more, the Trib is on-line atDave Boyd, aka Pharmasaurus RxGreenville, SCdaveboydjr(a)mindspring.com. Just so you know I made sure to point out the appaling lack of the other copies since it was written by a person from the county and published in Cartersville. They have to get more books anyway to help fill up the new library. Moving on, Mr.
Boyd, I did not see the family your were looking for. Could be there and I just missed it with so many names.
Anyway there was one Robert Boyd family listed as a chapter heading so I copied bits of it to post here so someone will know they are in that book (I was in a hurry at this point so it is a very small 'bit'). Children of Robert Boyd: William, John, and Margaret or Margret?

(I got a bit sloppy with my handwriting it seems) that married Unk Garvin 1. Bordon D Boyd b. Jan 15, 1802 1.
Jannice?(my sloppy handwriting again) married Dr. Charlie Crane 2. Captain Sneed (CSA) of Mississippi B. Cary Allen Boyd b Sept. Elizabeth Davis m.

William Alexander Boyd b. Jan 12, 1805 married Elizabeth Poague of Kentucky and it continued but that is where my notes stop such as they are. There was more info on these people of which I can make copies. Modern genealogy is actually off topic.you receive a message from someone privately, keep in mind that you should have their permission prior to posting their message on a publicly archived list. Invite them to subscribe tothe list if they do not already. Consider that they may have a purpose for sending the message off list if they are already subscribed. If you are in doubt, suggest they post their message on listso you may reply for the benefit of all and to ensure the data shared is archived. There's not much considered off topic on this list, but there are a couple that are really easily defined:Virus messages/warnings are off topic and are.not. to be posted to the list. Send them to the List Admin for review and possible relay to the list. This list has an excellent record for protectingeach other from the spread of virus/worms/trojan horses.
Be sure you have your anti-virus software installed, up-to-date, on and activated. The data you save may be your own! Should youreceive virus warnings from others, before taking action that may be deleterious to your computer, you probably will want to visit the virus encyclopaedias of the various anti-virus softwarecompanies. To name a couple:letters, schmaltzy 'find the missing child messages,' and others of this ilk are also not to be posted to this list. If you receive these from others, you will want to check them out atbefore sending them to others.
You will find that 9.9 times out of 10, they are a HOAX. If you feel you must share - run it past the List Admin first.Other no-no's:No posting of 'test' messages. No posting of copyright information. No links to sites known to infringe on copyright. No flames or nastygrams. That's not what we're here for!And if there is something else that comes up. The List Admin will privately let you know.A search of the List Archives for 'Admin Note' in the subject line will bring up messages sent on list to alert List Members as necessary to keep the list on track. They will contain additionalinformation that was pertinent to the group's list experience. Admin Notes' are not to be replied to on the list.

Disciplinary consequences:When necessary, those who break the rules or disrupt things will find themselves:- smacked with the 'VLF' - very large flyswatter. This causes their ability to post to be removed for one week - or until the Admin remembers to restore them.- moderated until such time they demonstrate the ability to follow the rules.- unsubscribed and banned from resubscribing. We are all adults. There is no warning required before enacting disciplinary measures. As a way of introduction, please post 'Who, Where and When' you are currently researching. Be sure to tell us what your burning questions are, so we don't assume that you know everythingand are just sharing the fruits of your labor! Let us know what records you have already checked when you are telling us of a brick wall - this way we won't send you back to where you'vealready checked. When you are tempted to post an Outline or other report from your genealogical software, go ahead. However, be prepared that doing this along with the statement 'if this looks familiar, pleasecontact me' will not engender as much response as you may think or desire.
This is not to say - DON'T. However, you will also want to include a good query with it. Or follow the 'datadump' with several good queries that focus on a smaller portion of your research. To see the trees through the forest, so to speak. By this method, you will generally see an improved rate ofresponse.Oh, btw - should you see on any list 'Roll Call' - be sure to change the subject to reflect your post and your lineage or the point will be buried in a slough of messages with the very samesubject line.As our list is open to a worldwide audience, it is best that when posting, one does not assume others are familiar with the geography of your research area.
List the town/city,county/shire, state/province, and COUNTRY. Listmembers are at various stages in theirresearch. Some are newbies just beginning. Some are more experienced. Some have been researching for over 20 years. Some are still researching where their ancestors immigrated to andothers are more fortunate to have progressed to research of where they may have immigrated from.
Still others are lucky to still live in the same place their ancestors resided. We havemembers that are exploring Boyd Slave Ancestry as well. Aboriginal Ancestry is also part of the Boyd Ancestry for those down under. Some folks prefer to use all caps for surnames. Just don't write your entire message using caps as that is considered rude and as shouting.
Nor should one use all lowercase - it ispoor English! And bugs some folks - not the List Admin, but others.:)Do not lose hope that you will find a connection. I have been on the list since before it was at Rootsweb.
